Before Anesthesia

Getting ready for IV general anesthesia is an important part of ensuring a smooth and safe procedure. By following these simple guidelines, you’ll feel more at ease and prepared for your surgery.
What to Do Before Anesthesia
- Avoid food and drink: Don’t eat or drink anything for at least six hours before your procedure. A small amount of water is okay for taking any pre-operative medications.
- No smoking: Refrain from smoking for 48 hours after surgery. If possible, quit or cut down as much as possible before your procedure.
- Arrangements for transportation: You must have a responsible adult with you to stay during the procedure and drive you home afterward.
- Post-surgery precautions: Rest for 24 hours after anesthesia and avoid activities like driving or using machinery during this time.
- What to wear: Choose loose, comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up, and wear flat, easy-to-remove shoes.
- Remove accessories: Make sure to take off contact lenses, jewelry, dentures, and acrylic nails before your procedure.
- Health updates: If you're feeling under the weather, such as having a cold or stomach issues, please inform the office before your surgery.
- Medications: If you’re on any regular medications, please reach out for specific instructions on how to proceed.
