Sinus Lift

If you have experienced bone loss in the back of your upper jaw—whether from aging, tooth loss, or other factors—a sinus lift at Rintel Oral Surgery can help restore the bone volume needed for implants.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, also called a sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure aimed at increasing the bone volume in the upper jaw, specifically in the area near the maxillary sinuses.

The maxillary sinuses are air-filled spaces located just behind your cheeks and above your upper teeth. When these sinuses are too close to the upper jaw, it can make dental implant placement difficult.

A sinus lift gently lifts the sinus membrane and places bone graft material in the space, creating more bone for the dental implant to be anchored to. The procedure allows us to create a stable base for implants in areas where bone is lacking.

Is a Sinus Lift Right for You?

If you’ve been told that you don’t have enough bone in your upper jaw for dental implants, you may benefit from a sinus lift. Ideal candidates typically have healthy sinuses and gums and enough remaining bone to support the procedure.

A consultation with our team will help determine if a sinus lift is right for you based on your oral health and specific needs.

What Happens During Sinus Lift Surgery?

Sinus lift surgery is often performed under local anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure.

Your surgeon will make a small incision in the gum tissue near the back of your upper jaw. The sinus membrane is then carefully lifted, and bone graft material is placed into the space.

Finally, the area is stitched up, and the graft material will begin to integrate with the existing bone. If you’re also receiving dental implants, they may be placed at the same time, or after your sinus has healed.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from a Sinus Lift?

Recovery from a sinus lift takes a few weeks for initial healing, but it can take from 4 to 9 months for the bone graft to fully integrate. During this time, it’s important to follow your aftercare instructions closely to ensure proper healing.

Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days to a week.
